Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, February 1, 2023 (2024)

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the February 1, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literature) for Wednesday, February 1, 2023 (Season 39, Game 103):

Published in 2011, P.D. James’ final novel, “Death Comes to Pemberley”, was a sequel to this novel from 200 years earlier

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Aaron Bola, an emergency medicine doctor from New York, New York
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, February 1, 2023 (1)
Patti Palmer, a bookseller & retired teacher from Tulsa, Oklahoma
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, February 1, 2023 (2)
Jake DeArruda, a delivery dispatcher originally from Ludlow, Vermont (3-day total: $68,661)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Wednesday, February 1, 2023 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Jake DeArruda has now won three times (in spite of being 0-for-3 in Final Jeopardy). He enters February as champion, and Patti Palmer and Aaron Bola are your challengers. Today is a crucial match for Jake, as a win today would certainly help any Tournament of Champions aspirations that he may have!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Famous mystery writer P.D. James wrote “Death Comes to Pemberley” as a mystery fiction sequel to Jane Austen’s famed early-19th century novel. Pemberley, in this case, was the country estate famously owned by Fitzwilliam Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

One careless thing, though, about this clue: Pride and Prejudice was published in 1813—198 years before, not 200. Certainly, the show playing with approximations in the past (“six months” comes to mind and Leslie Burns-Dell’Acqua in 2005) has resulted in contestants being returned to the show. I hope that none of the contestants today are caught out by this.

Today’s interviews:

Aaron performs medical-themed comedy.
Patti once organized a 110-mile march in Oklahoma.
Jake was a sports announcer as a high school senior.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I thought today’s game was very enjoyable to watch—I was quite pleased with Patti’s strategy as well; she is a very deserving winner.
  • With where Jake is positioned among all of the 3-day champions right now, I’d be surprised if we saw Jake again in the Tournament of Champions. I also thought that his introduction behavior at the start of today’s game was puerile, sophom*oric, and unbecoming of the Alex Trebek Stage. (I will have no further comment.)
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Jake $24,800 Patti $16,200 Aaron $7,400)

Jake: Standard cover bet over Patti is $7,601. (Actual bet: $7,601)

Patti: If Jake makes a cover bet against you and is incorrect, he falls to $17,199. Interestingly, a bet between $1,001 and $1,399 here both covers against that and guarantees you at least second place. That being said—you’re a bookseller. This is a literature category. Bet on yourself—and take home a bundle if Final works out for you. (Actual bet: $16,000)

Aaron: Bet whatever you like, but your chances of finishing second are better the more money you have at the end. (Actual bet: $6,400)
